TO: All Buc employees We were informed on 6 January 2004 by Johnson Controls, the service provider in charge of the facilities management at the Buc site, that the legally acceptable levels of "Legionella" had been exceeded during the course of the month of September 2003 in several cooling towers. These cooling towers are the thermal converters that, by means of a process of evaporation of water, permit the dispersal of the heat generated by the activities at the site into the atmosphere. Johnson Controls has confirmed that the required necessary measures were taken immediately to shut down, empty and treat the concerned installations. Following this corrective action, the levels of Legionella measured in October decreased substantially. Only the cooling towers of Coolidge 1 and 2 have required, to date, further treatments, which were effected immediately. Given the level of Legionella subsequently observed this action did not require the two installations to be shut down. The concentration of Legionella in the water sanitation network (showers, washbasins, toilets etc) never exceeded the threshold of detection. Subsequent to consulting the site doctor as well as official and scientific articles, we are able to consider that the risk to staff at the Buc site of contracting Legionellosis (Legionnaire’s Disease) between September and October 2003 was minimal. In light of the results from september and october 2003 we consider the risk as practically nil. The EHS department was not informed until 6 January last of these measures (on receipt of a report submitted by JC), whereupon the EHS department decided immediately to verify the effectiveness of the treatments, to confirm that the levels had returned to normal. The CHSCT will be meeting to discuss this subject the following Thursday. The management has informed the relevant administrative services. Furthermore, the results of the analysis, once received, will be communicated to the CHSCT and to staff by means of a notice.
